SINGLE speed DESIGN: Where does the name come from? Quite simply, it is a reference to the singlespeed (or one-speed) bicycle. In one light, the singlespeed is a functional, uncluttered tool that translates exertion into forward movement. In another light, it is this irreducible quality that gives the singlespeed its elegance in form.

What comes first - the practical or the aesthetic? Our answer is neither. Rather it is the simultaneous
convergence of form and content that we seek.

In architectural terms, the seamlessness between utility and elegance, the everyday and the sublime, allows us to broaden the role of design into an active, interdependent, problem-solving agent. At the urban scale, we strive to engage the multifaceted physical, social, cultural, and ecological dimensions that define a site.  At the scale of the building, our goal is to envision spaces and materials that are not only beautiful, but must simultaneously be sustainable, while reflecting an economy of means.
