In the Spring of 2015, Jinhee Park was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. Her research-oriented design studio looked at applying the principles of ‘Micro Urbanism’ to Pyongyang North Korea, a city that is aggressively over-scaled in its Stalinist planning. Forecasting 30 years into the future when the now heavily fortified North Korean border is dissolved, the studio takes the premise that the city fabric needs to generate stability on social, economic, and political grounds. Therefore, through minimal interventions designed to bring fine grain program and use to the city, inhabitants will be able to sustainably occupy and transform Pyongyang rather than take exodus from it – the latter being the current prediction that will likely bring catastrophic economic and social effects to neighboring nations.
